Iowa State is competitive and respected athletically without being an elite power that would take from the "have's" of the Big Ten. Elite secondary sports programs such as Women's Basketball, Volleyball, and Wrestling, are such examples, as well as competent programs in nearly every other sport where ISU competes.
We'll certainly challenge in men's basketball most years (we have more Big 12 titles than any school other than Kansas and Texas) and are continually improving in football (finishing last season with a bowl win against Big Ten member University of Minnesota) so this point isn't static. In a conference like the Big Ten, where member institutions work aggressively for the betterment of the whole league, we'll be a solid, respectable and successful addition.
